Sunderland Set to Host BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend Festival in 2026
The annual music festival, drawing tens of thousands of attendees each year, has officially announced its 2026 location as Sunderland. The event will take place at Herrington Country Park from May 22-24, 2026. Radio 1 Breakfast Show presenter Greg James revealed the news on air, expressing excitement about bringing the festival back to the city after a 21-year absence. The festival will feature approximately 100 musical acts spanning international headliners to emerging local talent. This year’s announcement marks the return of the event to Sunderland, which previously hosted the festival in 2005 with performances by Gwen Stefani, Foo Fighters and The Black Eyed Peas. Greg James highlighted the rich musical heritage of the North East, noting that Sunderland and surrounding areas have produced significant artists beyond just Sam Fender. Local musician Alex from the band Swindled expressed enthusiasm about the city’s growing positive momentum, particularly in music and football. The festival has previously been held in cities like Norwich, Swansea, Exeter, Dundee, and Londonderry, with the goal of bringing major music events to towns that typically don’t host such large-scale performances. Sunderland City Council is working with the BBC to ensure the event will be safe, inclusive, and enjoyable for all attendees.
