Tiny Caribbean Nation Makes History with First World Cup Qualification
In a historic achievement, the Caribbean island of Curacao has qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the smallest nation ever to reach the tournament. With a population of just over 150,000 and a land area smaller than the Isle of Man, Curacao’s success surpasses the previous record holder, Iceland, which qualified for the 2018 World Cup.
The tiny nation secured their spot after a goalless draw against Jamaica in their final qualifying match, a result that was particularly significant as Jamaica’s coach Steve McClaren resigned following the match. Curacao’s coach, 78-year-old Dick Advocaat, will become the oldest coach at a World Cup, surpassing the previous record held by Otto Rehhagel.
Curacao’s journey to the World Cup has been remarkable, rising from 150th in FIFA rankings a decade ago to their current position of 82nd. The expanded 2026 World Cup format, featuring 48 teams instead of the traditional 32, has provided a more favorable pathway for smaller nations.
The team’s success has been fueled by a squad of Dutch-born players with family ties to the island, including midfielder Juninho Bacuna, who chose to represent Curacao over the Netherlands. Bacuna noted the significance of the achievement, stating, ‘To be personally part of it and to make that dream come true would be incredible.’
