A devastating fire in Bradford has claimed the lives of a mother and her three children, with a trial hearing that the incident was allegedly started by a jealous ex-partner. Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her children Denisty (9), Oscar (5), and Aubree (22 months) died in the blaze that engulfed their Westbury Road home in August last year.

The prosecution alleges that Sharaz Ali, 40, who had a history of abusive behavior towards his ex-partner Antonia Gawith (Bryonie’s sister), poured petrol into the house and set it alight. Antonia, the only survivor, managed to escape but was unable to return to rescue her sister and niece and nephews.

Evidence presented at Doncaster Crown Court included doorbell footage showing Calum Sunderland, 26, carrying a large container of petrol. The prosecution stated that Ali had been motivated by jealousy and was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the incident.

Ali and Sunderland both deny the charges, with Sunderland claiming he did not know what Ali intended to do. A third man, Mohammed Amjid Shabir, who had driven them to the scene, died before the trial began.
